Cambridge International Airport Surveillance: Design Manufacture and Installation of Radar Tower
17 July 2020
Tower Installation at Cambridge International Airport
We are thrilled to have recently secured an exciting tower installation contract for Cambridge International Airport, where we will design, manufacture, supply and install the new radar tower.
The project is being managed by Thales, the number one global provider of air traffic management systems. Thales invited a number of companies from across the UK to submit proposals and, working alongside our partners MFD Communication Infrastructure, we were delighted to get the call to say that our tender had been successful.
Cambridge International Airport
Cambridge Airport is situated close to the centre of the historic city and very close to the thriving, high-tech business parks. With a range of services including an extensive aircraft charter service and a fully operational air traffic control service, Cambridge Airport has become one the of the best equipped regional airports in the UK. In fact, it is not uncommon to see some of the biggest names in the equine world coming through Cambridge Airport, as they make their way to Newmarket (often referred to as the Headquarters of British Horseracing).
Here’s what our Business Development Manager, Julian Cooper, had to say about the contract award; “This is a fantastic win for us and proof that smaller UK companies can compete with larger organisations.
“We are developing a good relationship with Thales and we’re really looking forward to getting started on the actual build. I would also like to thank Peter, Nigel and the team at MFDCI, who provided invaluable advice throughout the tender process. We have worked alongside MFDCI on a number of projects now and we’re looking forward to many more in the future.”
Tower Design, Manufacture and Installation
Currently, we are well advanced with the design of the tower itself, which will be done in accordance with the Thales technical specification. Once approved, the tower will be manufactured by the LARS team in the Fabrication Workshop at our Carnforth base. We will then be responsible for the logistics and transportation of the tower to the Cambridge Airport site, as well as all installation equipment, including cranage, task lighting and any scaffolding or MEWPs required. We will also need to keep an eye on the weather to make sure that the installation can go ahead – we will consult with the Met Office for the 48 hours prior to the planned installation activity.
Back to you Julian; “This is a huge project and we can’t wait to get started. And this just shows that all the hard work that went into achieving our ISO accreditations has really paid off. All the work on this project has to adhere to the strict requirements of ISO:9001-2015 and ISO:14001, both of which we’ve recently been audited for reaccreditation and achieved with no non-conformities.“
