From an Electricity Pylon to a Telecommunications Tower

LARS Communications were commissioned by Electricity North West Limited to carry out structural upgrades to a structure in Lancashire.

The structure was originally an electricity pylon that was converted to a telecommunications tower. The tower is located inside the grounds of an electricity sub station at Higher Penwortham near Preston. The structure is a 4 sided, 34 metre high steel latticed tower.

The tower tapers uniformly from 8.25 metre wide at the base to 1.8 metre at approximately 25 metres above ground level. The client wanted LARS to fabricate and install an internal spine ladder with feeder management system and rest and working platforms at 5.85 metres, 15.9 metres and 25 metre levels.

Additionally some of the existing plan bracing required removal to accommodate the centrally located full height spine ladder.
