Refurbishment of the Met Office Clee Hill Radar Site



LARS completed the refurbishment and structural upgrades to the weather radar site at Clee Hill in Shropshire.

The work at the Clee Hill site is part of a nationwide programme by the Met Office to upgrade weather radar capability, as well as improving the buildings and tower infrastructure to meet the latest health and safety requirements.

LARS was appointed as the primary contractor at Clee Hill, responsible for the fabrication and installation of staircases and platforms to improve the internal access to the radome.

The work was successfully completed over a ten week period and the Clee Hill tower is the 7th structure of its kind to have been upgraded by LARS.

The overall scope of works for the project comprised:


  • Oversee the removal of the existing Radome and Radar System
  • Remove existing ladders, platforms and hand railing
  • Install lower and upper platforms
  • Install companionway ladder with weldmesh cage, full perimeter handrailing and toe plates
  • Extend and strengthen the existing Radome platform
  • Install a new spiral staircase to the top platform
  • Construct a ground floor palisade enclosure and new staircase onto the concrete foundation
  • Fix down and seal the new Radome ring
  • Redecorate the equipment room and clean and repaint the tower
