Structural Upgrades to the Castor Bay Weather Radar Site

Location:Castor Bay in Northern Ireland

LARS Communications was awarded the contract for the Weather Radar Network Renewal project at Castor Bay in Northern Ireland, which included the fabrication and installation of a new 15 metre steel staircase to the existing Radome tower.

Groundworks included setting out the site accurately; deploying a CAT scan to determine the presence of all buried services and electric cables; hand digging to expose any services and electric cables; preparation of the concrete base for the new staircase; removal of the previous vertical access ladder; and reinstating the compound fence and new access footpath, including the construction of the new compound gate.

Sections of the new staircase were built up, including weldmesh flooring panels and handrail. The top platform was modified at ground level before raised and secured to the tower. A companionway ladder was fitted between the middle and top platform. Finally the structure was inspected and safe to climb certification issued.

The works took place over a 17 week period which also included the principle contract cover for the Radome removal and re-installation.
