Search and Rescue Installation for the Maritime & Coastguard Agency

Location:Hampshire

Sector:Maritime

LARS Communications has played a key role in a brand new, state-of-the-art search and rescue installation commissioned by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).

The installation, which is located in Hampshire’s Solent Airport Daedalus, comprises six Medium Earth Orbit Local User Terminal (MEOLUT) domes. The installation itself is one of only seven in the world and will provide the Maritime & Coastguard Agency with near instantaneous detection of distress beacons, as well as rapidly resolved location of the beacons using “single burst” processing.
The MEOLUTs were developed by McMurdo (a division of Orolia), the global leader in emergency readiness and response.

For this project, LARS assumed the role of principal contractor, working alongside other specialist companies on the installation of the domes. The installation includes a centrally positioned ‘GEOLUT antenna’, a five metre dish which sits equidistant from the six MEOLUT domes. Each dome measures four metres in diameter and sits on a five metre square base.

LARS’ involvement in the project began with undertaking dimensional surveys of the site, followed by the preparation of designs and drawings for the bases and the equipment cabin. LARS also undertook the fabrication of all steelwork required for the installation (most of the steelwork fabrication was carried out in LARS’ fully-equipped, in-house fabrication workshop and is all CE Marking accredited), as well as the excavation and construction of the MEOLUT dome bases and the construction of the GEOLUT antenna base.

As well as development of a full health and safety plan and full traffic management of the site, LARS also installed the equipment cabin and generator, and excavated the trenches for ducting and installation of the ducting and earth tapes.

The new system has been designed to provide unparalleled precision and timing, which will enable the Maritime & Coastguard Agency to respond promptly to any emergency situations.
