LARS Communications has recently completed a series of structural rigging upgrades and remedial consolidation works for Ofcom’s remote monitoring and direction finding (RMDF) masts located at six sites across the UK.

Locations

The Ofcom masts were located at the following six sites across the UK:

  • Wraysbury, Berkshire
  • Fife, Scotland
  • Chigwell, Essex
  • Birdlip, Wiltshire
  • Belfast, Northern Ireland
  • Baldock, Hertfordshire (x5 structures at the Baldock site)

Objective

LARS Communications was required to carry out a series of structural rigging upgrades to improve a total of ten Ofcom masts. The scope of works detailed below includes everything carried out across the ten masts.

Scope of works

  • Latchway Fall Arrest system maintenance and re-certification
  • New anti-climb needs fitting securely to tower
  • Strip out redundant feeders
  • Replace existing compound fence with new
  • New feeder gantry to point of entry on equipment room to replace existing catenary wire
  • New Roxtec gland required to correctly seal feeder cable entrance glanding
  • New point of entry LPS earth bar and associated cross bonding to existing earth system
  • Replace 6mm earth bond from cabonto tower LPS earth with new earth tape and make good
  • New point of entry earth kits on LDF450 feeder cables
  • To correctly cleat cables that are zip tied on tower with stainless steel studding and cleats
  • To retro fit flat, spring washers and locking nuts on tower holding down grillage studding
  • Fit tower signage in line with customer requirements and label feeder cables, top, bottom and point of entry
  • Re-weather all cables joints and connections
  • Re-Denzo all earth connections at ground level
  • Concrete tower base to be painted with non-slip paint to seal ageing concrete
  • Touch up tower paintwork

Additional Works

  • Remove dome antenna and mounting
  • Install pair of discone antennae – AOR735, Icom AH8000 (supplied)
  • Test feeders
  • Install feeder extension to new antennae and waterproof
  • Install GPS antennae at low level
  • Cap off / seal spare feeder and remove control cable

Outcome

LARS Communications completed the remedial consolidation works for Ofcom’s remote monitoring and direction finding (RMDF) masts within the allotted time period, and on budget. All ten structures have now been successfully upgraded.
